BMW iX4: The Next Chapter of BMW Electric Performance

BMW is bringing a little more emotion to the electric SUV coupé, and the new iX4 looks set to make a compelling case for going electric without leaving driving pleasure behind. Built around the brand’s Neue Klasse architecture, it combines a sleek coupé silhouette, next-generation EV technology and the sort of performance figures that is catch the interest of any BMW enthusiast.

The new iX4 is scheduled to make its debut in 2027 with two variants, the iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive, with the range-topping iX4 M60 xDrive following shortly afterwards. All three feature dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, but it is the flagship M Performance model that promises to deliver the biggest thrills.

A sharper take on the electric BMW

Visually, the iX4 makes a strong first impression. Its long wheelbase, short overhangs and sloping roofline give it a sporting profile, while the latest interpretation of BMW’s kidney grille and twin headlights creates a distinctive Neue Klasse front end.

At the rear, slim horizontal taillights, sculpted bodywork and a pronounced spoiler emphasize its athletic stance. The M60 xDrive gets its own M-specific rear spoiler, black Shadowline kidney grille trim and distinctive yellow front lighting elements.

The M Sport package comes standard across the range, bringing 20-inch alloy wheels and M Sport brakes with blue calipers. The M60 steps up to 21-inch wheels, while options measuring up to 22 inches are available. A panoramic sunroof with climate comfort glazing also comes standard, adding light to the cabin without compromising the car’s clean, contemporary design.

Serious range, serious performance

The iX4’s biggest technological leap comes courtesy of BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive system. Its new cylindrical-cell battery technology, 800-volt electrical architecture and more efficient electric motors promise greater range, faster charging and bidirectional charging capability.

The iX4 50 xDrive produces 469 hp and 645 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Its 108.7 kWh usable battery delivers a claimed range of up to 828 kilometres, while DC charging at up to 400 kW can add enough energy for approximately 387 kilometres of driving in just ten minutes, under suitable conditions.

The iX4 40 xDrive offers 374 hp and 520 Nm, with a 0–100 km/h time of 5.6 seconds and a claimed range of up to 638 kilometres.

For those who prefer their BMWs with a little more attitude, the iX4 M60 xDrive raises output to 612 hp and 875 Nm. It reaches 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h and a claimed range of up to 777 kilometres.

A driver-focused digital cockpit

Inside, the iX4 introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive, powered by Operating System X. The setup combines BMW Panoramic Vision, a 3D head-up display and a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, keeping essential information within easy reach.

The M60 adds M-specific displays, a dedicated Powermeter and electrically adjustable M Sport seats. A 13-speaker, 430-watt Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby Atmos also comes standard on the flagship.

Underneath, BMW’s new Heart of Joy computer coordinates power delivery and driving dynamics, working alongside upgraded chassis technology to deliver precise, composed handling. Adaptive M suspension is standard on the M60 and optional on other variants, while an electronically controlled rear M locking differential further sharpens the flagship’s cornering credentials.

There’s a lotto look forward to for BMW fans, the iX4 represents more than another electric SUV. It is a glimpse of how the marque intends to preserve its sporting character in the electric age: with serious power, intelligent technology and a cockpit designed around the person behind the wheel.
