For five decades, the BMW 3 Series has stood as the benchmark for the sporting saloon, a machine equally at home carving Alpine passes or arriving at the club in proper style. Finally after much speculation own what it would look like, Munich unveils its most significant evolution yet: the first fully electric 3 Series, christened the BMW i3, built upon the revolutionary Neue Klasse platform.
A Design Language Transformed
The new 3 Series cuts a thoroughly modern figure by adopting the Neue Klasse design language we’ve already seen BMW apply to its other platforms. The new 3 series looks purposeful with its 2.5 box silhouette, longer wheelbase, short overhangs and flared arches. The signature kidney grille and twin headlights merge into a singular, striking unit, whilst flush door handles extend automatically upon approach. M Performance models receive distinctive M Yellow Lights, borrowed from racing machinery. Sleek, aero with lots of character.

Inside the Sanctuary
The cabin is a design masterclass in restrained luxury. BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system comprises four elements: Panoramic Vision, 3D Head Up Display, a 17.9 inch Central Display angled toward the driver, and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel. A panoramic sunroof with climate comfort glazing floods the interior with natural light. Standard seats offer electric adjustment, memory functions and the Travel & Comfort System; while Harman Kardon audio provides suitable accompaniment.
Power Without Prejudice
BMW’s technology open philosophy delivers remarkable choice. Allowing you to choose how you want to enjoy the 3 series in either BEV, or ICE and later in the year a Plug-in Hybrid option too. The electric i3 50 xDrive produces 469 horsepower, ripping 0 to 100 kph in 4.7 seconds whilst offering a remarkable 912 kilometer range. DC charging at 400 kW adds 423 kilometers in just ten minutes. A second electric variant, the i3 40 xDrive, offers 374 horsepower and 710 kilometers of range.

For traditionalists, the M350 xDrive represents the combustion flagship, a 3.0 liter six cylinder producing 443 horsepower, reaching 100 kph in 4.1 seconds. Its new Drift Moment feature, activated via the Central Display, sends power exclusively to the rear wheels for unbridled sideways thrills when you want it.
Worth the Wait?
The first fully electric 3 Series moves the fan-favorite platform into the new era of BMW with a cohesive Neue Klasse approach in design and technology that runs consistent with their current Neue Klasse lineup. It demonstrates that electrification doesn’t diminish the BMW driving experience, offering a new way to enjoy the brand’s automotive philosophies with a thoroughly modern, full-electric 3 in the i3 while still keeping the door open to those who want to enjoy the Neue Klasse approach with traditional powertrains.
