Let’s face it, we carry a LOT when we walk out the door. For starters we’re never without the ubiquitous life-support system known as our smartphones, which, by the way have grown in size as the years have gone by. We’ve usually got a pair of sunglasses, and if you’re a man of a certain age you’ve got a pair of reading glasses in tow too. There’s the car key-fob, your house keys, a wallet, the life support system of your life support system: a charger or a powerbank…and the list goes on. Never since we we’re hunter-gatherers did we walk out of our caves burdened with so many accoutrements that we can’t seem to do without. Yes, trousers have pockets and we should use them, and if you are among the sartorially advanced you may be wearing a sport coat or the suit jacket that pairs with your trousers (God bless you by the way, we need more of you in this world) but there’s only so much you can stuff in a pocket without overloading it. The worst sinners will pack trouser pockets with nary a care how it ruins the clean, tailored lines that most of us strive for. Those sporting a jacket may thoughtfully attempt to distribute the load in your jacket pockets which in our opinion is only marginally better than bulging trouser pockets. Pockets are there for a reason, and by all means, use them, but as I previously said, there are limits. A stylish tote will carry all your things and more, you may not want all that space and bulk. And while a crossbody bag is practical, it’s not always the most stylish answer to the need (and yes, we’ve been guilty of the inelegant but very “practical” dad-bag ourselves).
