Scenic Bilbao via BMW’s iX1

The Invitation

Last year, I had the privilege of driving BMW’s top electric vehicle in their SUV lineup, the BMW iX, in one of the most stunning locations: Iceland, a country that exemplifies sustainability. The combination of this forward-thinking EV and Iceland’s commitment to renewable energy was breathtaking. We were excited to see what BMW would do next. This year, I’ve been lucky enough to be invited again by BMW to experience their further advancements in EV technology, especially how these innovations are influencing their entire range, from electric vehicles to internal combustion engine (ICE) models, to achieve more climate-neutral mobility.

The invitation took me to explore Bilbao and the Basque Country of Northern Spain in the new BMW iX1.

Bilbao via iX1

Embarking from Bilbao on a two-day scenic drive through the Basque countryside, we put the iX1 to the test. Northern Spain offers a striking contrast: it deeply honors its Basque traditions, quaint towns, and natural attractions like its vibrant surfing culture, while also embracing the future with modern art at the Guggenheim Museum, Michelin-star restaurants, and a growing commitment to renewable energy through wind farms. The iX1 was the perfect vehicle for this journey.

Can You Road Trip in an Electric Vehicle?

Naturally, a road trip in a BEV raises the question: can you drive cross-country? The answer is a resounding yes. With a range of nearly 400 kilometers on a full charge, we had plenty of mileage for a day of driving without concern. Plus, if we needed a quick recharge, the iX1’s battery can go from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes using public rapid chargers, which are common in Europe and something we’re striving to implement more broadly at home.

The iX1 is BMW’s electric version of the next-generation X1, a compact Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV). The new X1 features sleek design upgrades, such as modernized headlights, a more upright nose with a redesigned kidney grille, and a power bulge on the hood. The EV model is almost indistinguishable from its ICE counterpart, with the exception of subtle grille differences and the “i” badge. Despite being an entry-level model in BMW’s SAV lineup, the iX1 doesn’t compromise on luxury, offering impressive interior features, including a panoramic instrument display/infotainment unit powered by BMW’s latest iDrive system, which now lacks the center console control knob for a simpler, cleaner design.

Another standout feature in the cockpit is the wireless phone charging dock, depending on the variant.

The iX1’s specs are impressive, with a dual-motor drivetrain delivering 313 horsepower and all-wheel drive. But the numbers don’t tell the full story. The ample torque typical of EVs, combined with the vehicle’s low center of gravity from its battery placement, makes highway driving thrilling and the handling superb. It’s a driving experience that keeps you smiling.

The Power of Choice

In creating a BEV version of the popular X1, BMW has succeeded in offering a compact, versatile electric SAV that’s ready for any adventure, whether in the city or the countryside. More importantly, the iX1 maintains the renowned driving qualities of BMW, perhaps even enhancing the experience. Though it’s a gateway model with a utility focus, it delivers an engaging, driver-centric ride with handling and acceleration unique to EVs, bringing added joy to every drive.

With the iX1 now available alongside the new, more efficient X1 ICE model, BMW offers the power of choice. Drivers can choose how they want to explore—sustainably with an EV or traditionally with an ICE—while still enjoying the ultimate driving experience.
